When a Crediton goldsmith, Godfrey of London, is found
brutally murdered in his home, once again former Knight Templar Sir
Baldwin Furnshill and Simon Puttock, bailiff of Lydford, are called
on to unravel the mystery. Suspicion at first falls on John the Irishman,
a moderately successful local villain, who swears he is innocent and
tells the two sleuths that he saw two lepers near the house around
the time Godfrey's body was discovered. Simon is reluctant to visit
the local leper home (the maudlin), as he fears contamination, but
visit he does, and learns that Godfrey, who hated lepers, had been
heard to say that the place should be closed down. When the word gets
about that the lepers might have been involved in Godfrey's murder,
a series of attacks on the unfortunate victims ensues, culminating
in a fire at the maudlin. Surprisingly, Godfrey's daughter Cecily
donates a sum to make good the damage; her connection to one of the
lepers is her motive, and only when that connection has been revealed
will the full truth about Godfrey's murder emerge.
